Struzenberg Named Pitcher of the Year; Four Seawolves Named All-Conference
May 7, 2008
Albany, N.Y. - Sophomore Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) highlighted a group of four Stony Brook softball players named to America East All-Conference teams during the conference's awards banquet Wednesday night in Albany, N.Y. Struzenberg was also named Pitcher of the Year after going 21-8 during the regular season. Struzenberg's 21 wins broke the previous school record for most wins in a single season, which was set by Angela Andrews in 2004. Struzenberg posted a 1.98 ERA in 38 appearances. She recorded 223 strikeouts, threw 18 complete games, seven shutouts and picked up a save. Struzenberg is the first pitcher in Stony Brook history to be given this award. Joining Struzenberg on the All-America East first team was junior Marissa Fleury (Mahopac, N.Y.). Fleury was the Seawolves' most consistent offensive player, leading the team with a .352 average. Her 56 hits, 12 doubles and 29 RBI were also team highs. Fleury was also solid defensively, posting a .990 fielding percentage while splitting time between first base and catcher. This is the first time Fleury has been named to the first team; she was a second team selection last season. Junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) and sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) were both named to the second team. Fanelli's .310 batting average was the third-highest on the team and she led the Seawolves with seven home runs and 16 stolen bases. She tied Fleury with a team-high 29 RBI and struck out just 11 times in 174 at-bats. Fanelli and Kavitsky tied for the team-lead in runs scored with 36 apiece. Kavitsky was second on the team with a .329 batting average and 26 RBI. She was one of the most proficient base runners this season, swiping 15 bases in 18 attempts. She also led the team in sacrifice hits with 11.
Fanelli was named to the second team last season and was a member of the America East All-Rookie team in 2006. Kavitsky is also a former all-rookie team selection having earned the honor last season. Struzenberg, Fleury and Kavitsky were also named to the conference's all-academic team. |
