Struzenberg Sets Record With Two Wins Over Vermont

May 3, 2008

Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

Burlington, Vt. - Stony Brook sophomore Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) set a new school record for most wins in a season when she beat Vermont twice Saturday at Archie Post Field. The two wins give Struzenberg 21 victories this season, which is one more than Angela Andrews' 20 in 2004. The Seawolves are now 30-20-1 (13-7 America East).

The Seawolves wasted no time getting on the board in game one, scoring a run in the first inning when junior Molly Kestranek (St. Mary's, Ga.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Stony Brook tacked on three more runs in the next inning with a three-run homer to right field by sophomore Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.); and they kept it coming in the third, using an RBI single by Kavitsky, a wild pitch, an error and a sacrifice fly by junior Kelsi Fanelli (Audubon, N.J.) to score four more times, increasing their lead to 8-0.

In the bottom of the third, the Catamounts scored twice on a pair of wild pitches by Struzenberg, to pull within six.

The Seawolves were held in check during the fourth and fifth innings, but Kavitsky started off the sixth with a double to right centerfield. After a fly out and strikeout sophomore Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) singled to center driving in Kavitsky and extending the lead 9-2.

Stony Brook tacked on three more runs in the final frame, highlighted by an RBI single to right by senior Ashley Westphal (Huntington Beach, Calif.), to win the game 12-5.

Kavitsky led the Seawolves offensively in game one, going 3-for-3 with four RBI, three runs scored, a double, a home run and two walks.

After combining for 18 hits and 17 runs in game one, both offensives slowed down considerably in game two, managing just seven combined hits. One of those hits was a leadoff triple by junior Kelly Oberto (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) in the top of the third inning. Two batters later, Westphal flew out in foul territory to right field, but it was deep enough to score Oberto, which was the only run of the game.

Struzenberg allowed just two hits and recorded ten strikeouts, to earn her 21st win of the season. This was the sixth time this season Struzenberg has struck out ten or more batters in a game.

The University at Albany won both of its games today at Boston University and UMBC won both of its games against Maine, which means Stony Brook will enter the America East tournament next week as the No. 3 seed.

Stony Brook will finish the regular season with a single game against Vermont Sunday at noon.
